How to Manually Update Windows

Why update?

Windows includes vital security patches in new updates. Windows also includes new features, improvements and bug fixes in the updates. 

How to update Windows manually:

Step 1: Click on the windows start menu button to open the start menu.

Step 2: Above the start button, look for the gear icon and open settings.

 

Step 3: Click on Updates & Security.

Step 4: Click the check for updates button.

(Optional) Step 4b: If the check for updates button fails and you cannot find updates click on the blue "check online for updates from Microsoft update" link.

Step 5: Let updates download and install. Restart computer if prompted by Windows.

Troubleshooting

The "Brute Force" method

If the computer fails to update go to https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 and click the update now button and proceed with the steps below.

Step 1: Download and open Windows Update Assistant. Click the update now button.

You should be greeted by a download screen. It will download the updates, verify them, and then install the updates.

After the update reaches 100% installed, the program will prompt you to restart and presents you with a 30 minute automatic restart timer.

Click the restart now button or let it automatically restart. Once the computer finishes booting back up (it will take several minutes), your computer should be updated to the latest version of Windows.
